How do you know you are making the right decision when you say yes to one job offer or no to another?  What role do you want your job to play in your life upon graduating from UCLA?  How do you define “a good job”? In his first session, Matt Berndt – head of Indeed’s Job Search Academy – will share his career journey, how he finds meaning and purpose in his work, how he actively pursues “better work”, and how you can do the same. Drawing from the Job Search Academy and Matt’s 30 years of career coaching, he’ll provide actionable advice to help you pursue a lifetime of the best work for you.

Meagan Harmon

Meagan Harmon is a proud UCLA alumna who began her journey as a transfer student from Santa Monica College in 2022. She graduated from UCLA in 2024 with a double major in English and African American Studies, following a transformative undergraduate experience. While pursuing her degree, she studied abroad in London to complete her Senior Capstone, led a research program on transfer student retention, held professional on-campus roles engaging with students and campus partners, and advocated in student government for initiatives that enhanced transfer student access and belonging. She currently serves as Retention & Program Coordinator for the Center for Community College Partnerships, where she supports UCLA students, develops programs, and contributes to retention initiatives. Building on her experience in higher education, Meagan aspires to become an administrative leader in Student Services and is pursuing graduate school with the goal of earning an Ed.D. Passionate about access, equity, and student success, Meagan looks forward to sharing her journey and insights with fellow Bruins.

Evelin earned her B.A. in Education with a minor in Chicano Studies from University of California, Riverside and an M.S. in Educational Leadership from California Baptist University. Her passion for education stems from navigating five public schools in different Los Angeles communities. As a first-generation, low-income scholar, Evelin immersed herself in community organizing spaces in order to impress upon others the importance of pursuing higher education. Her mission to educate and empower comes from working with both high school and college students who share a similar background. Evelin recognizes the significance of sharing resources and its impact on improving students’ lives, which is her reason for dedicating her free time to promoting education through online platforms. Prior to working in college support programs, she served as a high school Dream Center Site-Supervisor in her hometown of Los Angeles. Throughout her professional career, she has demonstrated a commitment to planning, developing, implementing, and assessing programs designed to support the success and retention of first-generation low-income college students, students of color, LGBT+ individuals and students with disabilities in both the college and high school level. Evelin is driven to serve, motivate, and empower first-generation, low-income students to increase the representation in higher education and the professional world.

Lucy Chielpegian holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics/Applied Science from UCLA. She is a 2024 Teach For America Corps Member with a passion for providing better and more equitable school experiences to all students. As a 12th grade math teacher at USC Hybrid High College Prep, she has joined the fight for educational equity and math proficiency in South Central Los Angeles. Lucy previously worked as a Teaching Assistant at Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics (BEAM), where she focused on building community, encouraging curiosity, and making challenging math concepts accessible. At the UCLA Career Center, she prepared students and herself to enter the professional world, advancing her leadership skills as a program manager. These experiences not only helped the students she worked with grow, but also shaped her own love for education.

Steven Chin managed cross functional teams which collaborated with other companies in the same industry to shape public policy for California, and the nation. Partnered with lawyers in court proceedings to represent my company and customer interests while engaging with intervenors/interested parties and government agencies to advance policy. While in the treasury department, worked on corporate finance issues like analyzing dividend policy, cash flow during a financial crisis, financing alternatives, and re-negotiated contracts to reduce risks. Evaluated multi-million dollar engineering capital budgeting projects and other compatible dual use projects. Kent Chiu

Kent possesses over 31 years of expertise in information technology and software engineering, with a strong emphasis on project management, product release, and quality assurance. His career spans a diverse range of industries, including computer networking, film production studios, Internet services, and e-commerce. At one company, Kent designed and implemented an internship program, successfully recruiting student talent. Kent served on the Parents’ Council for ten years and held the position of Co-Chair in 2013. In 2018, he founded the UCLA Parents’ Council Emeriti Network and continues to serve as an active member of the Emeriti team. For the past ten years, Kent has also participated in Career Center and Career Bootcamp initiatives.

During my Master’s, I was able to publish a research paper and presented my work at the Biophysical Society Meeting. I have served as a mentor to undergraduate students through the Cal-Bridge program, CSUN’s Society of Physics Students (SPS), and USC’s Physics and Astronomy Mentorship Program (PAMP).

That said, I’m still fairly new in my career (graduated in 2023) and I’m still figuring out adulting & exploring careers. I really enjoy mentoring and guiding students through career exploration and professional development and though I’m still figuring out my life myself, I’d be happy to share what I have learned and any resources I’ve found. Michael Lima-Sabatini

Michael serves as Associate Manager of Institutional Giving at Food Forward, the nation’s largest urban-based food recovery organization. In this role, he manages grant proposals and reports to more than 80 institutional funders, maintaining a consistent organizational voice that communicates the impact of Food Forward’s work recovering fresh produce to serve over 300,000 people daily across Los Angeles County. Michael’s responsibilities extend beyond traditional grant writing to include prospect research, developing Food Forward’s government relations strategy, and staying attuned to emerging trends in philanthropy and the food system. His work bridges institutional giving with policy, helping position Food Forward’s food recovery model within broader conversations about food access and hunger relief. Michael cultivates a servant leadership style that prioritizes collaboration, strategic communication, and empowering teammates to achieve shared organizational goals. Dr. Michael Lin is a retired superintendent from the Corona-Norco Unified School District (2012-2021).  He received his Doctorate in Institutional Management from Pepperdine University and Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Michael served 30 years in public education. Prior to becoming a superintendent, he worked as a coach, teacher, site administrator and spent 14 years in Human Resources as a director, assistant superintendent and deputy superintendent for multiple school districts in the Los Angeles and Riverside Counties. During his tenure as a superintendent, Michael  was invited by President Obama as one of nation’s innovative school leaders to participate in the inaugural National
Connect Superintendents Summit at the White House.  He was also honored as one of nation’s top 15 Education Week’s “Leaders to Learn From”, recognizing forward-thinking superintendents. In 2015, Dr. Lin was named the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Region 19 Superintendent of the Year. In addition to proudly serving as an executive consultant for Riverside County Office of Education, Michael also serves as the Director of ACSA’s Inland Empire Personnel Academy. He volunteers his time as a board member for a local education foundation and a member of  the UCLA Parent Council Emeritus.

Ben Mendoza

Ben Mendoza (he/him/él) approaches his practitioner-based work through the lens created by his identity of being a first-generation, low-income, Latino man from Orange County, California. His Mexican and Bolivian family centered heavily on “traditional” family values, which narrowed his perspective of how he was meant to be his authentic self and live out equity-minded values. It was not until the introduction of identity-based support and community through residential education that Ben began to find his passion for holistically assisting underserved and underrepresented students in higher education. Currently, he is serving as a Resident Director at the University of California, Riverside. In this role, Ben supervises student staff, oversees conduct processes, serves in an on-call duty rotation, and advises three student leadership organizations. Even as a professional staff member, Ben continues to remember his beginnings and loves to connect with community members to learn and assist them in their journeys.

I am an independent consultant for GC Green, Inc., providing technology expertise and a volunteer member of the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District Clean Air Fund Advisory Committee. I retired after 33 years with the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD). Originally employed as an Air Quality Engineer, I transferred to Air Quality Specialist in Technology Advancement, and was promoted to Program Supervisor in 2007 to co-fund projects to develop and demonstrate zero emission vehicles and fueling infrastructure. A few of my projects while working at SCAQMD included providing early plug-in hybrid vehicles to California Air Resources Board (CARB) staff for testing and development of emission test protocols, training pubic affairs staff and elected governing board members to use early plug-in hybrid, battery electric and fuel cell vehicles and charging and hydrogen fueling infrastructure for demonstration and pubic education efforts, and daily supervision of the Diamond Bar hydrogen fueling station.

Spencer began his journalism career through a Dow Jones News Fund internship with the Bay City News, gaining professional experience in writing and photography. Before joining CSULB, Spencer worked in communications for the Rancho Santiago Community College District, supporting initiatives that promoted access and success in public higher education.
