Upward Bound Summer Counselor
TITLE: Counselor
CLASSIFICATION: Contingent I (“C1”)
DESCRIPTION/ RESPONSIBILITIES: The Pre-College Programs is seeking committed, talented, high-energy candidates to join our team. The purpose of the Upward Bound Counselor is to provide personal, academic and career development counseling to low-income and potential first generation college students by equipping participants with the necessary skills to successfully matriculate to post-secondary institutions of their choosing.
Specific responsibilities will include: Counsel and advise students on career possibilities and post-secondary opportunities. Work on an individual and group basis with students to provide social and personal counseling. Help students complete post-secondary admissions applications and financial-aid forms. Plan and coordinate workshops and activities for students, parents and schools. Monitor and manage student records according to program specifications. Some regional travel to target and feeder schools for recruitment and student follow-up is required. Some out-of-state travel for college tours, and other student travel. Participation in weekly staff meetings. Attend department of Undergraduate Studies, and unit staff development meetings. Compiles and submits monthly progress reports and annual reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Master’s degree in psychology, counseling, student personnel or related field in human services.
Experience:
- Two years working with high school students.
- Three years experience working with ethnically diverse and multicultural population.
- Experience designing and facilitating workshops with TRIO or other pre-college programs.
- Experience in academic advising and career/vocational counseling.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Specific knowledge of post-secondary educational opportunities and financial aid.
PREFERENCES: Two years experience with administration of counseling assessments. Bilingual (Spanish).
ADDITIONAL CERTIFICATIONS: Eligible for National Certified Counselor (NCC) and state licenses as professional counselor (LPC).

- Monday to Friday
- 10 am – 7 pm
