Tips for Transfer Students
Stay on Track During Your Short Stay at UCLA

As a Transfer Student, you might feel a bit overwhelmed and lost when leaving a small community college and beginning a college career at UCLA. It also may be a difficult transition because a transfer student has only half the time other students have to take full advantage of all the resources UCLA has to offer. Here are a few Career Center tips to help transfer students get the most out of their UCLA experience.

Explore Your Options: Understanding and identifying you future career options is very important. With only a couple years at UCLA, transfer students don't have time to waste. Exploring your options early will help you get the most out of your UCLA education and also help you begin to plan your future. The UCLA Career Center library has over 3,000 resources to help you understand career options, different industries, choosing a major and preparing for graduate and professional school. Stop by the Career Center for a "Drop-in" appointment. During "Drop-ins" you can talk to a Career Counselor about career issues such as choosing a major, job search, career exploration and you can also stop in for a resume critique.

Get Involved: Become involved with student organizations, volunteer experiences, internships, or part-time jobs. The experiences you gather while at UCLA will help you gain valuable skills and help you prepare for a career or graduate school once you finish your degree. Join a transfer student group to begin networking with other people in a similar situation. This can help make a large campus become a close and tight community.

Internships/Part-time Jobs: The UCLA Career Center offers an online job listing database called BruinTraks™. BruinTraks™ is updated daily and offers job and internship listings. These opportunities can help you develop skills and gain experience and understanding about what you will want to do once you leave UCLA. Internships can give you the opportunity to learn new skills and help you decide what career or work environments suit you best. The opportunities are excellent resume builders and can assist you in establishing useful contacts.

Career Opportunities: UCLA is a highly regarded institution and the university delivers wonderful opportunities to our students. Employers and organizations want to hire UCLA students and the UCLA Career Center offers an on-campus interviewing system called BruinView™ . BruinView™ is an online system that allows you to apply for many types of career and internship opportunities. As a UCLA student you can submit your resume online to employers who may then choose to invite you to the Center for interviews. Instead of going off-campus, fighting traffic and transportation for job interviews, you can interview for a position on your own campus.

Take advantage of all the resources UCLA has to offer. Make the most out of your short stay at UCLA and use the resources of the UCLA Career Center. The UCLA Career Center can help you get and stay on track to future career success.
